Ghent's delivery revolution

Last week we published an article about Ghent’s circulation plan and how it should improve the city’s accessibility and liveability. The plan is mainly focussed on preventing cars from entering the city centre, a notion which caused a lot of commotion among local businesses. But what are they so concerned about? And how can Bubble Post be of any help?

According to the Flemish Institute for Technological Research 37% of CO2 emissions in Ghent are caused by motorised vehicles. As stated in the city's climate plan, Ghent should reduce its emissions with 20% by 2019. So the circulation plan was introduced, restricting cars from entering certain parts of the city and making it harder to freely cruise through the centre. It prohibits deliveries between 11AM and 6PM and a permit is needed to enter the centre or pass through the knips (zone borders delineated by red painted markings). The plan should shape the city into a more open and accessible oasis for alternative modes of transportation.

It’s easy to see how this could affect local businesses. A lot more has to be taken into account when supplying their shops in the city centre. On the other hand, one of the plan’s goals is to encourage people to adapt their view on transportation and ultimately change their behaviour.

European cities are taking steps towards a greener and more enjoyable centre where (polluting) vehicles are no longer allowed. Oslo, for example, plans on banning private vehicles from the city centre by 2019 in an attempt to slash greenhouse gas emissions and Madrid is planning on redesigning its city centre with more bike lanes and pedestrian infrastructure by 2020. 

Ghent is the first city in Europe where such progressive measures are taken. But many other European cities have similar ideas and plan on closing their city centre for the same reasons. The upcoming trend of cities becoming car-free is definitely no longer neglectable. Pioneering car free cities such as Ghent are a big inspiration for others. Your city centre might become car-free quicker than you think.
